Hot Air Balloon Festival
This Memorial Day Weekend head to Zebulon’s Bennett Bunn Plantation and Spring Forest Road Park in North Raleigh for the inaugural WRAL Freedom Balloon Fest. Being the first hot air balloon festival in the Triangle in almost 25 years, it is bound to be a grand time! Bennett Bunn Plantation is located in Zebulon at 1915 Old Bunn Road and Spring Forest Road Park is located in Raleigh at 4203 Spring Forest Road.
Freedom Balloon Fest Schedule & Events
There will be many events and outdoor fun this Memorial Day Weekend, with celebrations and hot air balloons filling the sky. Here is the planned schedule, but keep in mind that all ballooning events are weather-dependent and subject to change:
Mass Ascension & Balloon “Glow”
Friday, May 22 from 3pm-9:30pm
Bennett Bunn Plantation
Enjoy watching the field of balloons get inflated and launch into the sky to kick off the celebration! Following sunset, many balloons will return back to the field or stay floating and “glowing” in the sky, making for beautiful photos and entertainment.
Championship Competition Flights
May 23-25 from 6am-10am
Bennett Bunn Plantation
Pilots show off their skills through the challenge flights, where they display their abilities to control their balloons. The pilots win points, prizes, and bragging rights.
Tethered Balloon Rides & “Glow”
May 23-24 from 3pm-9:30pm
Bennett Bunn Plantation and Spring Forest Road Park
Both locations will offer pilot meet-&-greets, where you can meet the pilot, see the inside of a basket, and learn about hot air balloons. Later in the day, both locations will offer tethered balloon rides, for a nominal fee, where you can feel what it is like to fly in a hot air balloon. Again, you will have the ability to watch all of the balloons “glow” after sunset.
* All events and admission are free. There will be a nominal fee for tethered balloon rides.
