Public Recreational Trails
The Capital Area Greenway system is made up of 28 individual trails consisting of over 100 miles of trails for residents to take advantage of. The greenway even has its own mobile app, RGreenway, to help users navigate and interact with one another.
Themed Races
Zombie Escape: This 5k includes 16 obstacles, tens of thousands gallons of mud, and… Zombies! The Zombie Biathalon obstacle requires you to shoot a zombie before it gets close enough to eat you!
Raleigh Color Vibe 5k: Get blasted with “magical color powder” as you run! Each color zone offers a different color so the further you run the more colorful you’ll be!
Krispy Kreme Challenge: First run 2.5miles from North Carolina State University to the Krispy Kreme located in downtown Raleigh to stuff your face with a DOZEN doughnuts. Now, the real challenge begins. After eating all of those doughnuts you have to run 2.5 miles back to campus!
Marathons and Half Marathons
Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh Marathon and Half Marathon: As you run through the city live local bands serenade you to the finish line. After the race there is a Finish Line Festival and Post Race Concert.
Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon and Rex Healthcare Half Marathon: Voted Best 2014 Full Marathon by the readers of Endurance Magazine! This event is made up of six events:
- Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon
- Rex Healthcare Half Marathon
- 10K
- Four-person Marathon Relay
- NEW Two-person Half Marathon Relay
- YMCA Kids’ Marathon Mile
Triathlons
Raleigh Ironman 70.3: Athletes begin with a 1.2-mile swim then take on the 56-mile bike course. Lastly, the 13.1-mile run course winds through downtown, around the Capital building, and through NC State University before heading down Fayetteville St. to the finish in City Plaza.
Olympic Triathlon at Beaverdam: The 1500-meter swim takes place in Beaverdam Lake. From there participants will bike 24-mile course featuring fast flats, small climbs, and rolling terrain. The final stage is a 6.2-mile run.
Triangle Run Clubs
Triangle Turtles and The Hares: This group is open to runners at any pace and style. They organize weekly runs and participate in local runs together. Membership is FREE.
North Carolina Roadrunners Club: This club started in 1979 and has grown to 400 members since. Members train and travel to and volunteer at races together. They hold quarterly meetings that feature guest speakers.
